Since its inception in 1988, SummerSlam has grown to become arguably WWE's second largest annual event. Naturally then, it has also played host to some of the most celebrated matches of the past generation. The following is our attempt at putting the in-ring contributions of the WWE performers in perspective -- holding them next to each other in our hands like two puppies and saying, "Uh, this one."

WWE Championship Steel Cage Match

The thrilling culmination of a near year-long sibling rivalry, 1994's masterpiece between Hart brothers Bret and Owen is also probably the best steel cage match in WWE history.

The first official TLC match in company history continued the rise to stardom of its individual performers and provided further proof that the early 2000s were the most electric period for tag team wrestling in recent years.

The sheer athleticism exhibited in the 2003 series of bouts between Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar has rarely been matched with this contest being no exception.

The rivalry between Shawn Michaels and Bret Hart added another layer with Michaels acting as guest referee. HBK's botched interferencence -- w
hich led to Hart's victory -- ignited a feud with the Undertaker that would eventually lead the two into the first ever Hell in a Cell match.

They would go on to have more higher stakes battles, but The Rock and Triple H stole the show at 1998's SummerSlam by expanding the physical vocabulary what a ladder match could be.

World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber Match

A
fter assaulting Goldberg with a sledgehammer, Triple H emerged victorious in only the second Elimination Chamber in WWE history.

The WWE rolled the dice, putting seven untested talents in a main event match in one of their biggest shows of the year. This could have been a trainwreck. It wasn't. In the end, the bookers were vindicated... this time.
